Meet Mr. Cabrio Lens

I recently sat down with Horizon’s new film-quality lens, Fujinon 19:90mm T2.9 Cabrio Premier PL, who we’ll call Mr. Cabrio Lens, to learn a bit about what he is bringing to the Horizon video production crew.

Mr. Cabiro Lens- what a pleasure to speak with you! For our audience, I’ll let them know we are sitting together in the Horizon studio within our offices on Fayetteville Street. We’ve pulled a couple of benches together in a corner as the studio itself is set as a dental reception office as part of a shoot coming up later today. So, Mr. Cabiro, let’s just get those specs of yours out to start things.

[CABRIO LENS]
Sure, sure. But first I do want to say how happy I am to be here at Horizon. I love field shoots and being on location, and I know I’ll have great footage with Horizon’s crew. OK, so you to your question, here are my specs:

General Zoom Length Range 19-90mm Zoom Ratio 4.7x Aperture T2.9 Close Focus 0.55m'' Angle of Focus Rotation 200° Angle of Zoom Rotation 120° Length 223 mm/8.8'' Front Diameter 114 mm/4.5'' Weight 2.7 kg/5.6 lbs Angular of View (16:9 Aspect Ratio) at 19 mm: 18°11'; at 90 mm: 3°28' Camera Mount PL-mount

[M.BELL]
Well, Cabrio you certainly know your specs!  For those of us who aren’t in the video equipment and gear business, can you translate all those measurements into more general description?

[CABRIO LENS]
Oh, of course. Well, all those numbers and measurements really just mean that I add a rich, full film quality to all footage.  Sharp, clear, rich and accurate colors are my thing.

[M.BELL]
Now, from my research I understand that the term “Cabrio” refers to cars somehow.  Could you explain that term and how it applies to your features?

[CABRIO LENS]
Great question, great question. That term, “Cabrio” is a nickname from Cabriolet, which car buffs know is a convertible.  Since I can easily convert to cine style EFP/ENG style production, video techs who know car history started calling me “Cabrio” and well, it stuck, and it is now part of my official description.

[M.BELL]
Converting seems a great feature, especially for the field. You mentioned looking forward to going on location with Horizon’s crew. How do you fit into a typical field shoot?

[CABRIO LENS]
Just like any zoom lens, really. I wouldn’t exactly say I’m small, but I’m small enough and light enough that the crew can easily use me for handheld shoots. Basically, I’m the “typical” Fujinon ENG style zoom lens, but with the image quality and superior look of a PL cinema lens.

[M.BELL]
With the ability to capture film-like footage, how do you see you contributing to corporate video production?

[CABRIO LENS]
Well, that’s one of the reasons I’m excited to be at Horizon.  Often feature films and broadcast television crews have to hire additional crew just for lens work. To get that high-end look with other lenses, the project costs go up to hire the additional manpower for the lens.  Not with me.  Crews can use me like they would on a 2/3” camera.

[M.BELL]
So, smaller crews can use you in shoots – on tripods or as handheld – and still get that “cinema” quality.  Are there other production benefits you provide?

[CABRIO LENS]
Definitely. Not only can smaller crews still get film quality footage with incredible quality and deep colors, but my focal length options means more efficient shooting time.

[M.BELL]
How could focal length relate to efficient shooting time?

[CABRIO LENS]
Yeah, I guess if you haven’t been on a crew that connection isn’t immediately apparent… well, with other types of lenses, if you have adjust your background – to be softer let’s say – you might have to stop all shooting and change out the lens to one with a different focal length.  Since I convert, you can keep shooting to getting different shots without stopping and changing lenses.

[M.BELL]
Cinema quality, smaller crews, efficient productions. Mr. Cabrio Lens, you are impressive.  Thanks for your time and welcome to Horizon!!

[CABRIO LENS}
Thank you, thank you.  You’ll be seeing my work on the Horizon portfolio in no time.  See you out in the field!
