Pedestrian Safer Journey – Educational Media Now Available

The Horizon team developed three products (targeted to Elementary, Middle School, and High School) in both English and Spanish versions under the Federal Highway Administration’s banner of Pedestrian Safer Journey.

The videos are accompanied by quizzes and discussion topics to support educators as they present this important information to their classes. Horizon worked with the subject matter experts at UNC Highway Safety Research Center and Toole Design Group to customize the message for each age group.

Elementary and Middle School products use an age-appropriate story with animated characters and voices demonstrating safe pedestrian behavior.

The quiz questions that accompany each product help reinforce key topics while encouraging discussion among adults and kids on pedestrian issues. These educational media products were developed by Horizon team members, Dan Oliver, Megan R. Bell, Jason Cooper, Ben Park, Kevin Robinson, and Brain McPherson, as the information moved from concept, to script, to visual character development, to voice talent casting, to animation, to sound design, to quiz question programming, and lastly final files.

High School content was developed in video format with local talent and locations.

The script, written by Horizon’s Emmy Award winning writer Dan Oliver, speaks to the age group while weaving in the key messages identified by the Subject Matter experts. The Horizon video post-production team, including Tim Finkbiner and Taka Yamato helped ensure the videos final steps.

Meanwhile, project administration for the year-long effort was managed by Horizon’s Office Manager, Brenda Dejewski. In fact, the creation of the final deliverables – 2 English language custom animations with quizzes, 2 Spanish language custom animations with quizzes, 1 English language video with discussion topics, and 1 Spanish language video with discussion topics, is a result of many skill sets working together to successfully finish the project.

The Horizon team extends a warm and special thanks to UNC Highway Safety Research Center’s Nancy Pullen-Seufert and to Toole Design Group’s Diane Lambert as the project’s Subject Matter Experts and Coordinators.  Their work to gather input from educational advisory groups and other transportation agencies helped ensure the accuracy and effectiveness of the final products.

Horizon looks forward to our next project with the collaborators to create the Bicycling Safer Journey educational media.
