Horizon Helps: Food Bank

In 2011, over 18.6 million pounds of food were distributed to 279 agencies, using 16 trucks traveling over 495,000 miles; all thanks to the Food Bank’s Raleigh branch. The Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina’s Raleigh branch serves 13 counties: Duplin, Franklin, Halifax, Harnett, Johnston, Nash, Sampson, Wake, Warren, and Wayne.

In the counties served by the Raleigh branch, over 233,694 individuals are at risk of hunger; 79,990 are children and over 11% are 65 years and over.

Volunteers are a crucial part of the Food Bank of Raleigh’s ability to serve our region.  The six members of today’s Horizon Helps team rolled up their sleeves and dug in to contribute to the Food Bank’s important mission. Through the day’s efforts, volunteers worked together to sort and bag 3000 pounds of potatoes to help feed approximately 300 North Carolina families.

But what was the most heartwarming moment of the day?  Without question, this most excellent and lovely heart potato found by Horizon’s own Brian McPherson.  What’s not to love?
