Horizon Helps: 2012 ““Stand By Me” golf tournament for Alzheimer’s NC

Since Horizon Helps was initiated, staff members have picked various causes they felt strongly about.  It was my turn so I suggested that we volunteer at the annual “Stand By Me” golf tournament for Alzheimer’s NC.

Several years ago, Horizon produced a training video for caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients.  That was my first real encounter with the disease.  Witnessing the challenges that the patients, their families and caregivers face everyday, my heart just broke.  A few years later, I learned that my grandmother also suffered from dementia.  It was hard to see her being confused and struggling to remember things.

Alzheimer’s NC is an organization at the forefront of the effort to fight the disease.  The annual golf tournament is one of their fundraising events, and I just wanted to be a part of it.  On June 18th, 77 golfers gathered at the Prestonwood Country Club.  Six Horizon employees helped with registration, selling raffles, driving carts and keeping scores.

The cure for Alzheimer’s is not yet discovered, but all we can do is to fight for it.  And I am hopeful that one day we will find the cure.
